Side of the road

(3-28-10) I hiked up just above Arapahoe Basin (A-Bay) and Thor shot me coming down this awkward hill. I combined the sequences into photoshop.

11:11

Woke up this morning at 11:11
Wasn't in Portand and I wasn't in heaven
Could have been either by the way I was feeling
But I was alive, I was alive
Woke up this morning at 11:11
John was half-naked and Lulu was crying
Over a baby that will never go crazy
And I was alive and kicking
Through this cruel world
Holding a notion of you at 11:11
Tell me what else can I do
What else can I do?
Woke up this morning and something was burning
Realized that everything really does happen in Manhattan
Thoughts were of characters and afternoons lying
And you, you were alive
Oh the hours we are separate
11:11 is just precious time we've wasted
So patch up your bleeding hearts
And put away your posies
I'm gonna have a drink
Before we ring around the rosies with you
Oh the hours we are separate
Oh the hours we are separate
11:11

Mountain Biking - Salida, Colorado - Jan. 18 2009

Living in the High Country of Colorado for the past 8+ years, I would have never imagined riding my mountain bike in the middle of January. After an old buddy renewed my love for singletrack, I decided to do some researching. I found out there is a sort of desert oasis only an hour and half away from the snow filled, buried in, resort community of Summit County where I reside. With a recent and temporary January thaw, my spring fever had kicked into high gear, so I decided me and my bike should head over to Salida.
I had doubts for a moment as some friends had said I was crazy. As I loaded my bike onto my car my fingers were freezing to the point of numbness. "Maybe they're right?" I thought. "There's no way Salida isn't buried in the white fluff??" It didn't matter, I wanted to get out of town anyways, and since I'd camped and rafted in Buena Vista; I knew at the very least it was gonna be an absolutely gorgeous drive down that way. I really wanted to see for myself if Salida was truly the BANANA BELT of Colorado!

Leadville, CO. Is there really dry land only an hour from here?

About 40 miles away from Salida and the answer seems to be YES !!

Watch for bighorn sheep!

Just another day in Colorado!

Is it just me or are the cottonwood trees on the right trying to bloom already?

So, I arrived on the dot for the 12:00 ride.
I hurried to grab my gear and get situated.
  • Shoes - check!
  • Front wheel - check!
  • Backpack with Gloves, Ginger Larabar, Water, Camera, Keys - check!
  • Close the hatch and lock my backpack in car with keys inside - DOH!

                    Let's RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be coming down the mountain when I come.

A little slow, but hey its January! Who cares?

Me and Mt. Ouray in the distance.

"Sangre de Cristo, in thy cold purity thou'rl emblematic of blood shed to free the world of its woe for man's soul's security, shed to save sin-fettered mortals like me. San de Cristo, bright monte vista thy cloud piercing peaks shall my monument be; and when I am sleeping where thy shades are creeping Sangre de Cristo wilt thou shelter me?" - Unknown

After this ride I got back and called the locksmith to unlock my car, then I went back up in the afternoon light to ride some more and snap some pics.

Creeping up the jeep road there is a cool water silo, at least I believe it to be, with a bunch of graffiti and the words "big lee" which I thought was funny.

To get a perspective look at the water silo down there. (Left bottom) After shooting my shadow, I looked down to realize I had a completely flat tire and I left my spare in the car.

That, along with locking my keys in the car couldn't ruin this day!

Walking down the jeep road. I passed a couple people who saw I had a flat and said, "That sucks" so I said, "Not Really, its fricken gorgeous for the middle of January", and they were like "Good point."

What an awesome crew over at Absolute Bikes. I can't wait to come back!
Take the "POOP" with you!

Rafting, Skating, Biking, it's your choice in Salida.

I'll skate this next time once the local kids clean out the dirty snow.

Back to Summit County. What an AMAZING day that truly felt like a vacation, yet it was only 1.5 hours way!! If you've never been...GO!
